About Baggett
In 1928 Baggett
Transportation Company began its operation in the transportation business as a local
carrier in Birmingham, Alabama area hauling dynamite for the local coal companies. The
company was owned and operated by Mr. Jess Baggett. By the mid 1930s, William D.
Sellers, Jr. had come on board and acquired a small interest in the company.
At the end of 1941, war had
broken out for the United States. Baggett was called upon by the then Department of War to
help in the movement of munitions because of its past experience with the transportation
of dynamite. Also, in the same period, Baggett had been fully acquired by William D.
Sellers, Jr. Under the direction of William D. Sellers, Jr., Baggett evolved into a major
transportation company. Not only did Baggett transport explosives and munitions for
commercial shippers and the now Department of Defense, but it also entered ino the LTL
business within the State of Alabama and other areas of the Southeastern United States.
In 1976 Baggett sold its LTL
business and became a truckload carrier, maintaining its service with the Department of
Defense and commercial shippers.
